Tal R: Rosa See

Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin, DE

Galerie Max Hetzler presents “Rosa See,” a solo exhibition by Tal R, marking the artist’s debut at the Berlin location. Born in 1967 in Tel Aviv and now working out of Copenhagen, Tal R is known for his vibrant and dynamic exploration of colour and form. This latest collection of work, inspired by a journey to Iceland, offers a deep dive into the artist’s expansive visual vocabulary and an inquiry into the essence of representation.

“Rosa See” features a series of paintings and drawings that encapsulate the Icelandic landscape through a lens that is anything but ordinary. The lakes depicted in these works are alive with non-naturalistic, luminous colors that dance between abstraction and figuration. Tal R employs a bold, almost amoebic approach to shape, with vividly colored landforms and dynamic patterns that evoke both the tangible and the elusive aspects of the natural world. Rain is portrayed through thick, vigorous strokes, while water surfaces ripple with energy, and sporadic, simple shapes hint at the presence of pebbles and vegetation.

Central to Tal R’s exhibition is the exploration of color, especially pink, which he describes as simultaneously superficial and significant. This choice reflects the artist’s fascination with the way colors can convey complex, often contradictory emotions. The lakes, depicted in shades from bright coral to dark mulberry, become metaphors for the layers of meaning and emotion that lie beneath the surface of our perceptions. The unique shapes of the canvases further engage the viewer, inviting them to complete the images in their mind’s eye.
