Santiago Ydáñez: The Power of the Brush

Verduyn, Moregem

The Spanish contemporary painter Santiago Ydáñez’s solo exhibition titled The Power of the Brush runs at Verduyn in Moreghem, Belgium, exploring the so-called weapons of mass seduction of painting. The exhibition consists of eleven paintings portraying people and animals, approaching painting as a window to the world, directed by the artist’s gaze and hand.

Born in 1967 in Jaén, Spain, Santiago Ydáñez works and resides between Berlin, Germany, and Granada, Spain, and studied painting at the University of Granada. The Spanish painter’s aforementioned weapons of mass seduction encompass his paintbrushes and acrylic paint, as he powerfully renders his selected images with vigor and virtuosity. “He depicts portraits of animals, genitalia, and faces covered with colored paste, sometimes violently but always ingeniously. His works are marked by accuracy, spontaneity, monumentality, and a certain promiscuity of the image in general in an eclectic contemporary era.” (Press release Verduyn)

Ydáñez has been a prolific figure for painting over the past two decades, with international recognition during the ABC-Prize for Painting and the 33rd BMW Painting Prize. With exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as the CAC Málaga, the Whitebox Art Center in Beijing, or the Künstlerhaus Bethanian in Berlin, Santiago Ydáñez’s impressive career reaches another milestone exhibition at Verduyn with The Power of the Brush. The exhibition runs from February 5 until March 19, 2023. For more information and inquiries, please consult the website of Verduyn here.
