The Vietnamese-German artist Minh Dung Vu is a contemporary painter who rather sews his compositions instead of painting them. Due to minimal interventions on linen, abstract paintings by Vu are marked by subtlety, texture, and ingenuity. He explores the possibilities of painting, materiality, light versus shadow, and our perception of everything above.
Dyed fabrics, most often silk, are sewn onto the canvas, creating an interplay of the visual characteristics of the material medium with the surface as its carrier. His background in graphic design feels very palpable in his artistic practice as he carefully searches for the exact spot for a specific piece of fabric to be placed on its surface, with the general image remaining perfectly in balance.
Born in 1995 in Vietnam, Minh Dung Vu studied graphic design at the Vietnam University of Fine Art before taking on painting at the University of Fine Arts in Essen and at the Graphic Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig, Germany. In 2020, Vu received an award of recognition at the STRABAG Art Award in Vienna, Austria. The young emerging artist has exhibited in Germany and abroad at emerging and renowned galleries.
Minh Dung Vu resides and works in Leipzig, Germany.
