Asya Geisberg Gallery’s extended exhibition Verso della Terra, the latest solo exhibition by Angelina Gualdoni, has been a stand-out showing by the American painter. Building on her botanical themes from “The Physic Garden,” Gualdoni now explores the rhizosphere, the soil layer where roots thrive. This underground realm, along with the mycelium network connecting fungi and trees, symbolizes interconnectedness and growth, resulting in ten paintings on display marked by exquisite brushwork, decomposition, and decay.
“Verso della Terra,” translating to “towards the ground,” reflects Gualdoni’s unique observational methods. She combines urban and natural elements, inspired by her foraging in New York City and the surroundings of her studio. Her work melds undefined liquid-based spaces with structured natural forms, challenging traditional spatial perceptions. Gualdoni’s evolving technique involves pouring, staining, and patterning paint from the canvas’s back, creating a dynamic interplay between above and below-ground elements. Her art, focusing on themes of decay and rebirth, reminds viewers of life’s cyclical nature and our shared mortality.
Gualdoni’s innovative use of the picture plane invites us to explore the hidden world of decomposition and renewal. Her work, influenced by Cubist space fragmentation, subverts expected visual relationships, offering a rich, multi-layered perspective on the natural world’s complexity and beauty.
