Biography

Robert Fekete is a Romanian contemporary artist living and working in Cluj, Romania. Fekete is best known for his paintings marked by colour, figuration, strong contrasts and a certain playfulness.

Born in 1987 in Satu Mare, the Romanian painter draws inspiration from second hand imagery, such as photographic material of friends, old newspapers, film frames, landscape photography and more. Fekete fragments his source material by manner of painting them boldly, using strong contrasts and bright colours.

As a result, the paintings have a strong collage-like feeling to them, as he cuts figures out of their original context and pastes them into new and eclectic surroundings. The final result takes form in dynamic and spontaneous paintings, an assemblages of ambiguous fragments painted into an amalgam entity. Also, he is a representative of the contemporary art scene in Cluj, Romania.

Robert Fekete studied at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. He has been represented by galleries such as Tajan ArtStudio in Paris, France; M77 Gallery in Milan, Italy or Conduits Gallery in Milan, Italy. Fekete participated in the group exhibition The Wanderers, Contemporary Painting from Cluj at Richard Taittinger Gallery in New York, the United States of America. The Romanian artist was also a participant in the group show Portraits of Power curated by Jane Neal for the Prague Biennale 5 in Prague, Czech Republic. Robert Fekete is featured in national and international private collections.
