Henry Curchod: Rome is No Longer in Rome

C L E A R I N G, Los Angeles, US

C L E A R I N G Los Angeles presents Rome is No Longer in Rome, a solo exhibition by Henry Curchod. Marking the artist’s latest body of work, the show explores the layered complexity of identity and its resistance to simple classification. With a series of paintings and drawings, Curchod continues his investigation into the self as a composite—at once part and crowd, singular and multiple. The exhibition runs until July 12, 2025.

Borrowing its title from a phrase that suggests historical and existential displacement, the exhibition gestures toward a world in which origins are no longer fixed. Informed by Édouard Glissant’s Poetics of Relation, the works embrace multiplicity and openness, reflecting the idea that we exist not as isolated beings but in flux—shaped by influences that are neither linear nor wholly traceable. Curchod’s drawings and paintings engage with this condition through a language of gestural immediacy and symbolic layering. The resulting forms appear unanchored yet precise, as if the figures or scenes are assembled in real time from scattered fragments of thought and memory.

In his accompanying text, the artist describes painting—and drawing in particular—as a space for unpacking the self. Through line, color, and rhythm, he reconstructs a visual vocabulary that offers both clarity and ambiguity, mapping out interior landscapes without reducing them to conclusion. These are not portraits in the traditional sense, but rather momentary alignments of form, emotion, and reflection—each one a kind of open boat, as Glissant writes, launched toward connection.

Born in Palo Alto in 1992 and currently based in London, Curchod holds a BFA from the University of New South Wales. His work has been exhibited in solo presentations at Gallery Vacancy (Shanghai), Shoot the Lobster (New York), Mamoth (London), and at international fairs including Paris Internationale. His paintings and drawings form part of prominent public and private collections, including X Museum, M WOODS, and the Sifang Art Museum in China. Rome is No Longer in Rome marks his latest solo exhibition with C L E A R I N G, and his first in Los Angeles.
